Comments: Military Service was confirmed by OCGS through Fold-3.com. The book: The Long Blue Line(…*) erroneously gives 1918 as the death date. It also noted a military headstone was applied for. Findagrave.com has a memorial #15725366 but does not show a picture of a Military Marker. The information provided by a Judy (Harrison) Foster to Findagrave was “Jeremiah Sampsell Anawalt b. Oct. 29, 1835 Berlin, Somerst Co., Penn., d. Oct. 29, 1915 Okmulgee, OK. His first wife my grandma was Katherine/Catherine “Kitty” Sponaugle b. Sept. 19, 1834 Highland VA., d. Oct. 23, 1868 Middlebury, Elkhart, Indiana, after she died he married Emily Jane Statzell on Apr. 4, 1872 Clinton, Indiana, she was born May 5, 1853 Clinton, Indiana, d. Nov. 3, 1931 Okmulgee, Oklahoma they had 7 children.”
OCGS confirmed the death date of 1915 with Oklahoma state records showing an index of a death certificate with the same date shown on the headstone and with the grand-daughter’s statement. A Death Certificate is on file for this person and can be obtained from the state of Oklahoma.

Husband of Susan A. Bays. Military records posted to Findagrave, and available online, says he was 19 years old, mustered out 14 March 1866. Described as 5′ 2 1/2″ tall with dark hair and blue eyes. Born in Fulton Co., Ill. Died 25 Oct 1923 in Coalton, OK. A Death Certificate is on file for this person from the state of Oklahoma. Census records for 1900 through 1920 show this name in Indian Territory and later in Oklahoma but did not show him in Henryetta in the 1920 Census, indicating the possibility he moved to the area after the census of 1920. This person can be found in member trees on Ancestry.com.

Comments: Military Service was confirmed by OCGS by Military Marker. Also buried in the same lot are: Sarah Jane Black (1851-1916), and Fannie Black (1890-1944). This person can be found on Ancestry.com where Sarah Fronabarger is shown as his wife. (An earlier marriage was noted). His Birth of 28 Jul 1843 and Death of 27 Oct 1923 and middle name of Jackson can be found on Findagrave.com memorial #41339911, and Ancestry.com. Census records indicate he was in the Henryetta, OK area in 1910 and 1920. Ancestry.com indicates he was born in Scotland and arrived in the U.S. in 1855. A Death Certificate is on file for this person from the state of Oklahoma.

ERRONEOUS INFORMATION
The book “The Long Blue Line(…*)” printed that this man, (buried in the Morris Cemetery), was a member of the 5th KY Cavalry. Reference was made to: Ruth Harris Gousse’ of Morris OK as providing the information. However, the Findagrave.com Memorial #65628703 clearly indicates this person was born in 1877, well after the end of the Civil War. The OCGS could not find a James Blankenship as part of the 5th KY Cavalry.
After further research OCGS determined there is a William S. Blankenship who fought for the 5th KY Cavalry and is burried in the Morris Cemetery. We consider this to be a case of reporting the wrong person to the author of the aforesaid book. OCGS does NOT consider James to be a civil war veteran. If anyone has information to correct what is recorded here on our website please contact the OCGS with whatever information you have. Thank you.

Went in as a Private and mustered out as “Musician”. This name was found in the 1910 Census in Okmulgee County area showing a wife by the name of Ann. This conforms with the Findagrave information for wife’s name as Annie.

Comments Military Service was confirmed by OCGS from NPS.GOV. Found in the 1920 census for Okmulgee. Was a member of the Okmulgee GAR at the time of his death. He attended the 1923 Ponca City GAR meeting. Based on this information it was speculated that he was buried somewhere in Okmulgee by the author of “The Long Blue Line…*”. However, a member tree at Ancestry.com shows a picture of a family tombstone with 4 names on it. One person with this same name has a birth date of 10 Apr 1843 and death date of 29 Mar 1924 with notation that he was born in London England and died in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. It is unclear if this is a memorial marker or the actual location of his grave. The marker is located in Clarinda Cemeteray, Clarinda, Page County, Iowa. Ancestry.com member tree shows him as John C. Clipson who went by “Jack”. OCGS research confirms J. C. Clipson was living in Okmulgee, I.T. in 1907. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to let the OCGS know in order to update this information. We are including this information here but currently it appears this person MAY NOT be buried in Okmulgee County.

Since he is the only member of the Colored Troops found in Okmulgee county, so far, we have included this contributions to the Findagrave Memorial by “Wes T.”Burie

Comments: The book, “The Long Blue Line” shows this person as being buried in Bryant, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma. Bryant is a small community located halfway between Weleetka and Henryetta. Actual burial is at Hillcrest Cemetery in Weleetka, Okfuskee County, OK. Perhaps he was living in Bryant at the time of his death, but the OCGS did not pursue this line of thought. OCGS. The OCGS did confirm Military Service but took no further action regarding researching this individual since he is not buried in Okmulgee County. There is a Findagrave.com Memorial #22772768.

Comments: Military Service confirmed by Military Marker and cross checked with NPS.GOV. This VERY eroded tombstone was misread in the 1970’s by the OCGS for its inventory of Okmulgee Cemeteries and was recorded as Harold Hayes. The error continues to circulate in different publications both in print and on the internet. The Military Marker has been examined and photographed thoroughly and the OCGS is confident it says Arnold Davis. In addition, other documents and sources were examined and the OCGS is certain that a military marker for a person named Harold Hayes never existed. Contact Okmulgee County Genealogical Society for further information about the error determination, if desired.

Comments: Military Service confirmed by Military Marker with Confederate Cross and information. NPS.GOV confirmed this as a Civil War Veteran. A Findagrave.com memorial # 21578255 provides additional details about the family. Headstone application can be found at FamilySearch.com and says he was a member of Searcy’s Battalion Missouri Sharp Shooters. The application date was 4 May 1937 and gives death date as 27 Jul 1936. This death date was confirmed by OCGS on the Oklahoma Death Certificate Index.
Ancestry.com has family trees for this person and should have additional information. Census records indicate that he and his wife, Nana/Nannie moved to Okmulgee sometime between 1900 and 1907. They were listed as living in Muskogee, I.T. in 1900. This census gives a birth month and year of Nov 1845. The special 1907 census, prepared for entry into statehood shows the family living in the city limits of Okmulgee. This person can be found in the Okmulgee Census for 1910, 1920, and 1930. Newspapers clippings of his death referred to him as a former commander of the United Confederate Veterans and used the title General and Brigadier General. We could not ascertain whether these were honorary titles of the Veterans group or his title during the civil war. His headstone application refers to him a Private, which is what we have recorded here. Additional information might be found in the obituary/death notice published in the Okmulgee paper on 29 Jul 1936. A copy of which can be ordered from the OCGS through their website at www.okmcgs.com.

A Findagrave.com Memorial #41338042 provides basic information and picture of the marker. The memorial shows birth date unknown with a death date of 11 Oct 1920. There is an Ancestry.com entry for a William P. Denning, died in Oklahoma that should be looked into if you are interested in this individual. That was the only close entry on Ancestry.com which could be found in January 2019. Military records may confirm a common identity. Any possible connection was not confirmed by the OCGS. Otherwise, the OCGS was unable to confirm residence in Okmulgee County with online resources available.

Dray was born in Ross County, Ohio and married Eliza Jane Bogard in Ross County, Ohio on March 1, 1855 in Ross Co. Ohio. Their children were James W., Mary E., Cora, Samantha and Eugenia Catherine. Obituary is included at Findagrave.com which says “”Henry Dray, an ex-union soldier, 84 years of age, died Sunday morning at the home of his son-in-law, S. A. Miller, near the Warden mine camp. Relatives from out of town were present at the funeral that took place from the Dorsey Undertaking parlors. Rev. J. S. Weaver officiated at the burial which was at West Lawn Tuesday of this week.

A Findagrave.com Memorial #41338868 provides basic information and picture of the marker, along with family information. This information said he died in Dewar, OK and spouse was given as Ardelia F. Havener. The headstone application can be found at FamilySearch.com, giving death date of 2 Feb 1932 with the application dated 8 Feb 1932. The death date could not be confirmed with the Oklahoma Death Certificate Index by a preliminary search by the OCGS. This person can be found on Ancestry.com family trees which may contain additional information. The first census found for this person in Oklahoma was in 1910 for Henryetta, OK. The 1920 census was not identified by the OCGS and the 1930 census shows he moved to nearby Dewar, OK.

Comments: Military Service confirmed by Military Marker with Confederate Cross and information. The closest match found on NPS.GOV was for a J. Hardin who served in the 6th S.C. CAV not the 5th SC INF as stated on his headstone. The headstone application was found, dated 28 Feb 1944, and confirms death date of 22 Feb 1944. It further shows enlistment date as 1864 and discharge date as 1865. a Findagrave.com Memorial #131494214 has basic information as well as names of relatives. It appears Mr. Hardin moved to Henryetta, OK sometime between 1920 and 1930 as he was listed in the 1930 Census for Henryetta. This person can be found on Ancestry.com family trees which may contain additional information. The OCGS is reluctant to determine the two Hardins, mentioned above, as being the same person but does note there is an obituary in the Okmulgee paper, dated 24 Feb 1944 which may provide additional information. A Findagrave.com Memorial #16748618 provides additional details about the family. A quick search by OCGS of Ancestry.com did not find this individual nor was the headstone application found. This lack of headstone application information was a surprise because the application database was for applications after 1925 and should be there. The death date was originally found from the Findagrave memorial and then confirmed by the OCGS from the Oklahoma Death Certificate Index. With limited information we were not able to confirm existence on any of the Okmulgee Census records prior to the stated death date on FindaGrave. Additional research may provide more information. Birth year used here was also on Findagrave memorial.

Comments: This VERY eroded tombstone was misread in the 1970’s by the OCGS for its inventory of Okmulgee Cemeteries and was mistakenly recorded as Harold Hayes. An error that continues to circulate in SEVERAL different publications both in print and on the internet. The Military Marker has been examined and photographed thoroughly and the OCGS is confident it says Arnold Davis. The identity of Arnold Davis as belonging to the unit mentioned on this marker has been established to our satisfaction. In addition other documents and sources were examined and the OCGS is certain that a military marker for a person named Harold Hayes never existed. Contact Okmulgee County Genealogical Society for further information about the error determination, if desired. Any other sources should be discounted as they all originated from the original OCGS error.

Comments: This is another Military Marker that was misread by the OCGS in its 1974 inventory of Okmulgee County Cemeteries. In this case the incorrect name was read as Jacob Weemes. The error persists in several publications and internet databases. Military Service was confirmed by close examination of the Military Marker by the OCGS and research of documents and information contained at NPS.GOV and Fold3.com. No Jacob Weemes could be found in this company and/or regiment but Jacob Hermes was confirmed. The Findagrave.com memorial is #16322430.

Comments: Military Service confirmed by OCGS with near certainty. There is a Findagrave.com memorial for James N. Hufstedler with a brass marker that is not the traditional Civil War style marker. It appears to be custom made and states he was in Co. D 3rd AR Cav. However, the NPS.GOV does not have a Hufstedler in ANY Arkansas Cavalry unit. It does have a J. N. Hufstedler in the Co. K 1st AR Mounted Rifles.
A pension index card does show James N. Hufstedler of Co. D 3rd AR Cav applied for by his widow “Mary” filed in Oklahoma. The Findagrave site gives Mary Griffen as the spouse so we assume the individual buried here is the same as the one in the pension and we have assigned Co. D 3rd AR Cav as the unit. There is a Findagrave.com memorial #65627158, member trees on Ancestry.com, and records on Fold3.com that may contain additional information. The OCGS did not go deeper into this research.

Census records indicate that he and his wife, moved to Severs Township (now incorporated as part of Okmulgee) sometime between 1900 and 1910. They appear in both the 1910 and 1920 Census records. The 1907 census, prepared for entry into statehood, does not include them among those living in the township of Okmulgee at that time. Birth month and year taken from 1900 Census, also shown on Findagrave memorial. The Death Certificate Index for Oklahoma supports death date given on the Headstone Application. This application shows permanent address as Holdenville, OK. Ancestry.com has family trees for additional information. Census records indicate that he and his wife, Mariah moved to Okmulgee sometime between 1900 and 1910 where they are shown as living in Okmulgee, Okmulgee, OK in 1910 and 1920. The 1907 census, prepared for entry into statehood, does not include them among those living in the town of Okmulgee at that time. Birth month and year taken from 1900 Census. Birth year was also on Findagrave memorial. Death date on the Death Certificate Index for Oklahoma deaths shows 4 Jun 1922, which is what we decided to use, as the death certificate information would have been given closer in time than the headstone application which was applied for ten years later on 7 Oct 1932, by Bert Martin. Additional information might be found from his front page notice of death published in the Okmulgee paper on 11 Jun 1922. Neither was he found on a preliminary search of the Oklahoma Death Certificate Index system. A search of Ancestry.com member trees also fail to find a definite match at the time of search. Birth and death dates were taken from Findagrave Memorial and were unable to be independently confirmed by rudimentary research by the OCGS.

The NPS.GOV site has several William Reagan and one William Ragan indexed for the 1st California Regiment. OCGS did not do a detailed search but from a preliminary glance these may all be one or two individuals instead of 5.
There is a Findagrave.com memorial 87215603. It quotes an obituary as follows: William Henry Reagan, aged 83 years, 2 months, and 8 days, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. T. J. Hayes, in north Stroud, Wednesday, February 27, 1924. He has been a resident of Stroud for a number of years, but has been visiting a daughter in Los Angeles, California for several months, having only returned to Stroud a few days ago. He was a soldier of the Union Army and a member of Barber Post, G.A.R. and was most highly respected and dearly loved by all.
The funeral was conducted from the family residence Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock by Rev. Fred M. Goff and the remains were shipped to Beggs this (Friday) morning to be laid to rest beside his dear wife who preceded him only a few months ago. The deepest sympathy is extended the sorrowing daughters Mrs. T. J. Hayes and Mrs. Risor. (Published in The Stroud Messenger, February 29,1924.) O 1st KY State Troops. Research found a headstone application which identified this better as Co. O 1st Regiment Capital Guards, KY (state troops). The application confirmed shipment of tombstone to Beggs and last residence as Mounds, OK. Findagrave was not showing a picture of the headstone. There are member trees on Ancestry.com with additional information about this person and his family.

Comments: It was confirmed by OCGS through NPS.GOV that a William Wheeler was in Co F OH Heavy Artillary. This grave was identified by the book “The Long Blue Line…” as the gravesite of William Wheeler of this company and regiment. However, OCGS could not find with 100% certainty that these persons are the same. More research is needed to confirm this William Wheeler is the same as the one listed on NPS.GOV for Co F of the Ohio Heavy Artillery (H.A. on Findagrave.com memorial #32914892 stands for Heavy Artillery). We do feel there is a high likelyhood of a match. More biographical information is on the Findagrave.com memorial. Ancestry.com member trees were inconclusive to prove this William Wheeler is the same as the civil war veteran. We are placing it here as strongly suspected but not 100% confirmed by documentary evidence. Findagrave.com memorial said birth is 1844 and death is 1929.
